Trust Us—We Understand

When it’s time to handle important matters, we all want things to go according to plan.

For example—if you book a reservation for your child’s birthday at an extravagant venue, you’d expect the host to follow the itinerary exactly as discussed, right? Or, if you head to the ATM for a hefty withdrawal, you’d fully expect it to dispense every bill requested.

But we all know life doesn’t always work that way. Sometimes you have to take the loss… and make lemonade.

The same goes for skincare. Seeking out your esthetician for personal skin goals is the right move—but it’s important to remember that they’re here to coach you through the process, not wave a magic wand. Everyone’s skin is unique, and our genetic makeup plays a huge role in how we respond to products and treatments.

It’s tempting to point fingers when your skin reacts unexpectedly, but in reality, your esthetician is learning your skin over time. Progress often takes a series of treatments, and in many cases, your skin needs to be conditioned and adjusted to professional care.

If you have acne-prone skin, prepare yourself for the not-so-fun truth: your skin may get worse before it gets better. True skincare requires patience, consistency, and a bit of trial and error.

Instead of imagining a straight, smooth road to your skin goals, think of it more like hiking up a mountain—there will be ups, downs, and a few unexpected turns. But with each appointment, your esthetician learns more about your skin and can adjust the plan using different techniques, tools, and treatments.

The Real Myth

One of the biggest misconceptions is that finding the “perfect” regimen is all it takes to achieve flawless skin. While the right products are crucial, they’re only part of the picture.

Food can be one of your best skincare allies. Remember the saying “you are what you eat”? While it’s not literal, it’s almost literal when it comes to your skin. (See Last Blog Eating for your Skin Health for our discussion on healthy eating for healthy skin.)

Your diet, exercise habits, sleep patterns, and daily lifestyle all play a role in your skin’s health. Start paying attention to how your skin reacts to certain habits. Maybe you’re eating too many starchy or fatty foods, maybe you’re not washing your pillowcases often enough, or maybe you just need a mental health reset.

Identifying the root cause of the problem will get you closer to the solution.

And Most Importantly—Don’t Give Up!

Work with your esthetician to set realistic goals. Schedule a thorough consultation, invest in healthy, high-quality products, and be open to change—especially if your current routine is doing more harm than good.

If your esthetician says your moisturizer is actually contributing to dryness, don’t “use it up” just because you paid for it. Yes, it may have been expensive, but your professional treatments likely cost more, and you don’t want to waste their benefits by pairing them with the wrong products.

Together, you and your esthetician can create a plan for steady, sustainable improvement.
